     The 2012 Citizen of the Year Annual Awards Banquet, hosted by the Greater Chiefland Area Chamber of Commerce, is Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Tommy Usher Community Center.

  • New election machines coming

    Levy County Supervisor of Elections Tammy Jones told the county commission she is setting up a demonstration of new voting equipment with two state-approved vendors as she hopes to have a new system in place in time for the 2014 elections.

  • County delays alcohol sales hours workshop


    The Levy County Commission workshop on extending alcohol sales beyond midnight in the unincorporated ares will not be held on March 5, said County Coordinator Fred Moody.

    He said the commissioners were hearing from residents about the proposal and realized it would need a bigger meeting place than the commission meeting room at the courthouse to accommodate the anticipated crowd. 

    He said the 1 p.m. meeting time also was not convenient for some citizens. 

  • 2013 off to deadly start with 4 traffic deaths

     A Thursday crash on U.S. Highway 41, just south of the intersection at County Road 335, at 8:20 p.m. claimed the lives of two Newberry residents, one of whom was honored this month as Alachua County's Crossing Guard of the Year.

    It also tied up the busy highway that passes through the Raleigh community, which has a blinker at the intersection, and connects Archer, Newberry and Williston, among other rural communities.

    The Levy County Republicans are known for nabbing cutting edge newsmakers at their annual fundraising dinners nabbing potential presidential candidate U.S. Sen Marco Rubio in 2009 and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's former spokesman Rick Tyler who heads a super PAC, among others.

  • CHS academics reach new heights

    2013 is turning out to be a year of firsts for students at Chiefland High School.
    With 17 students earning at least a 4.0 grade point average, more of Chiefland's brightest than ever before are climbing higher on the academic ladder of success.
    A GPA of 4.36, the highest ever achieved at the school, was also realized this year by two students at the same time, resulting in yet another first: two valedictorians.

  • Weather Service seeking photos of 'Storm of the Century'

    The Winter Storm of '93, more commonly referred to as the "Storm of the Century," will be commemorated by the National Weather Service in Ruskin on March 12-13.
    The Folks at the NWS Ruskin have asked Levy County Emergency Management Director Mark Johnson to reach out to the residents of Levy County who experienced this devastating winter storm to share any photos that they took of the storm damage in Levy County.
