  • Doris Carnes

    Doris Usher Philpot Carnes, 90 died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Tr-County Nursing Home.

    She was born Nov. 2, 1917 to Etter and Iris Usher. She was a homemaker, lifelong resident of the tri-county area and a member of the Methodist Church of Keystone Heights.

    Survivors include daughter Anita (Charles) Bryant of Bell; son Sidney (Cheryl) Philpot of Lakeland and Richard Philpot of Gainesville; brother Etter (Helen) Usher Jr. of Chiefland; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

    Jose A. (Tony) Flores-Toro, died Monday, April 28, 2008 in a car accident.

    He served 30 years in the United States Navy and was the owner of Sears in Chiefland.

    Henry Allen

    Navy Veteran

    Henry Allen, 64, died April 17, 2008 at Tuscany House in Summerfield after a year-long battle with cancer.

    He was born in Cross City Jan. 16, 1944 and reared in Ocala.

    He was a member of New Beginnings Church in Horseshoe Beach. He also attended First Assembly of God Church in Belleview for the past two years.

    A career Navy man, he served his country for 24 years. After retiring he worked for 16 years with the Florida Department of Corrections at Lowell and Cross City Correctional.

  • Dora Elizabeth Valentine

    Dora Elizabeth Valentine, 89, of Horseshoe Beach died Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at her home.

    She was a lifelong resident of Dixie County. She was a homemaker and mother and a retired nutritionist for the Alachua County School System. She was Southern Baptist.

    She is survived by children Steven Valentine, Frayne "Smokey" Valentine and Evonne Cline all of Horseshoe Beach; brother Blaine Butler of Jacksonville and eight grandchildren.

    A memorial service will be held at a later date.

    Arrangements were under the care of the Rick Gooding Funeral Home, Cross City.

  • Sylvester

    Sylvester "Ski" Swierski, 89, of Fanning Springs died April 11, 2008 at Tri-County Nursing Home in Trenton.

    Born in Buffalo, N.Y., he moved to Florida in 1957 and to this area in 1998. He served his country as a Seaman 1st Class in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a member of the D.A.V. #56 in Palatka and #63 in Cross City. He was an instructor at Sunnyland Training Center for 23 years. He enjoyed traveling and wood working.

  • Roberta Smith

    Roberta Smith, 77, died April 8, 2008 at Shands Hospital.

    She came to Levy County from Miami in 1984 when she retired from Southern Bell Telephone company.

    She was a member of Bronson Methodist Church, Telephone Pioneers and the Homemakers Club.

    Survivors include sons Michael R. Ramsey, Charles Kevin Ramsey and Dennis P. Ramsey; stepsons Charles A. Smith Jr. and Greg K. Smith and six grandchildren.

    Funeral services were held April 16 at the Bronson United Methodist Church.

    Knauff Funeral Home, Williston, was in charge of arrangements.

  • Mary E. Oakes

    Mary E. Oakes, 86, of Archer died April 9, 2008 at the University Place Care & Rehab.

    She lived most of her life in Big Pine Key and moved to Archer a year ago.

    Survivors include her children Kingsley Bruce Oakes and Nancy Oakes.

    Knauff Funeral Home, Williston, was in charge of arrangements.

  • Lauretta Michevski

    Lauretta Louise Masterson Michevski, 83, died April 1, 2008 at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville following a lengthy illness.

    She was born July 26, 1924 in Warren, Pa. to the late J. Edward and Mildred (Lawson) Masterson.

    She was a graduate of Hoff's Business College in Warren and later moved to West Palm Beach where she was employed as a medical decoder at St. Mary's Hospital.

    She was an avid reader and baseball fan.

    She had been a part of the Chiefland community since 1992, coming from Jacksonville. She was a Catholic.

  • David F. Martin

    David F. Martin, 53, died April 7, 2008 at his residence in Morriston.

    He had lived in the area 36 years, moving from Hialeah.

    He worked in construction and enjoyed the outdoors and working on old cars.

    Survivors include a son David G. Martin of Morriston; brothers Leon Martin of Warner Robins, Ga., Theo Martin of Dunnellon and Claude Martin of Morriston; sisters Pamela Foster of Morriston and Mary Perales of Ocala.

  • Trude Levin

    Gertrude E. Ullrich Levin, 84, died April 7, 2008.

    She was born Aug. 14, 1923 to Edmond and Edith Ullrich.

    She is survived by her sister Vera Pare; children Sandra E. Davis and Luther E. Davis III; grandchildren Dawn Sanchez, Luther E. Davis IV, Jennifer Campbell and Jacqueline Campbell and great-grandchildren Nicole Davis, Matthew Sanchez and Virginia Campbell.

    A memorial mass was celebrated April 13 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Williston.

    Arrangements were under the care of Knauff Funeral Home, Chiefland.
