Yard bandits strike retirement village

Residents of Oak Grove Village Retirement Park, between Chiefland and Trenton, say retirees in the area would be wise to hide their prized pink flamingoes and garden gnomes.
Yard ornaments in the neighborhood have been mysteriously disappearing for about a month, according to resident Charlotte Maupin. "Three homes have been hit," she said. "One of them twice."
Area resident Donald Smith said he woke up Nov. 15 to find that his lighted palm tree had been swiped off his front porch.
“I just walked out and said, 'Something's missing,'" Smith said, adding that whoever took the tree had to have carried it off in a truck or SUV. Smith said the tree had to have been stolen between the hours of 2 a.m. and sunup.
Smith promptly called the sheriff's department and made a report. He said he was assured that law enforcement would step up its patrols. But Smith's not taking any chances.
“We used to put our goose out, but I'm not puttin' it out this year, that concrete goose."
