What are you passionate about?

-A A +A
By Carolyn Risner

At dinner Monday night, friends and I discussed the passion so many of our other friends have for a myriad of topics.

For one it's water quality; another hunting; someone else history and still another, football.

"What are you passionate about?" I was asked.

There was no answer.

At one time in my life, I was passionate about my children, but as they grew and needed me less, my passion waned.

Once my work was a passion, but during 20 years in journalism I have developed a cynicism that caused that passion to ebb.

For the past two days, I have thought much about what drives me now, and the only thing that keeps coming to mind is my passion for living.

There is much that I care about–family, friends, work, my spirituality, my country, the environment–but to limit my zest to one area is near to impossible.

Or so I thought.

In the tax collector's office Tuesday renewing my car tag, I heard the clerk ask a man in his mid-to-late 60s if he were a registered voter. He said he was not.

"Do you want to be?" She asked.

"No," he said. "I tried that once and it just didn't work."
