Warning: County offices to be filled in Aug. 30 election

One party dominance means everyone votes in primary

By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

It's a funny thing, but usually candidates for local office square off in a party primary and then face their opponents in the other party in the general election.

Not so this year in Levy County where the Republican Party is dominating local elections and the Democratic Party candidates are nonexistent.

Because every candidate in the races for Levy County Superintendent, County Commission and State Representative 22 are members of the Republican Party, every registered voter ― no matter their party registration, affiliation or non-affiliation ― gets to vote in the Aug. 30 primary and there will not be a general election for those local offices on Nov. 8.

Where Democrats once dominated voter registration in Levy County, since 2008 their numbers have fallen as Republican voter registrations have risen. On Tuesday, the Supervisor of Elections website showed the county had 26,146 registered voters with 9,493 saying they are Democrats to 11,778 choosing to be Republicans and 4,875 others.
