Trenton High baseball 2nd in district tourney

GAINESVILLE -The Trenton High baseball team qualified for the Class 2A regional tournament by finishing second in the District 5 event played at Oak Hall.

The Tigers fell in the championship game, 4-3, to the host team in an eight-inning thriller.

Trenton took a 15-12 record into Tuesday's regoinal quarterfinal game at Jacksonville-Providence. Providence was 23-4 and ranked No. X in 2A.

"The Times Union has them rated the best team in the entire Jacksonville area,"Tigers coach Scott Guthrie said.

Against Oak Hall, Ryan Schmidtz was 3-for-3 and C.J. Bowers 2-for-2 with four stolen bases.

"We had the bases loaded and no outs in the third and strick out three times," Guthrie said.

TRENTON 3, BRANFORD 0 -The Tigers advanced to the district final by shutting out Branford in the semifinals on Thursday, April 24.

Andy Jones was a standout both on the mound and at the plate.

On the hill, the senior left-hander pitched a three-hit shutout. He struck out five and walked zero.

At the plate, Jones was 2-for-3 with a RBI.
