Transportation change could help area teams

It's time to put to bed an upsetting rumor, if only temporarily, that middle school sports in Levy County Schools will be cancelled next year as part of the school budget restrictions. Not yet, anyway.

“No, that's definitely a rumor; it's not true,” said Levy County Superintendent of Schools Bob Hastings.

“But the fact is, we are evaluating ways to save the district money, and everything is on the table.”

Around Levy County, coaches, administrators and other athletic personnel are trying to work with the school district's new budgetary restrictions, both actual and potential.

Hastings recently confirmed that for the spring 2009 season, the district will only provide funding for teams to play the minimum number of games required by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) and tournament games already scheduled. For Chiefland and Williston baseball and softball, in the six-team District 5 (3A), that's 10 games plus tournaments. For Bronson, it's 12 games, due to their placement in the seven-team District 5 (2A).
