TNR gets kudos from Washington DC

To the editor:

The Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest animal protection organization, applauds the collaborative Trap-Neuter-Return efforts of Sheltering Hands, Humane Society of Levy County and River City Community Animal Hospital (“33 down, lots more to go in latest TNR”).

The HSUS supports TNR programs to reduce homeless cat populations. Fewer feral cats will mean fewer nuisance complaints (about overpopulation, fighting, spraying, roaming and wildlife predation) to animal control and city officials and fewer public health risks (bites, rabies). TNR will effectively and humanely improve the lives of the city’s cats and citizens and is a much better use of a municipality's limited time, money and resources.

In addition to TNR to manage feral cats, pet cats must be spayed or neutered before they can reproduce at 5 months of age, kept indoors or safely confined to their property and provided with visible identification so that if they become lost, they can be reunited with their owners.
