Take care of those pets

-A A +A

Protect your pets. I live in the area of Manatee Springs State Park where the woods are vast, and wildlife is abundant, despite the steamy summers and dry spells. It is not a place to let your pet roam free with little regard for its safety. Campers should be aware that your dogs are not familiar with the area. I have witnessed several non-resident dogs exploring the community in which I live. They go from house to house, their tongues red from 90-degree temperatures, running on empty stomachs only to wander farther and farther away into the midst of wild hogs, rabid foxes and angry cattle.

Recently, late at night, a small dog arrived at my house. Spooked in the darkness, the dog, a terrier, barked for all he was worth. As it traveled to the next house, exploring up and down the driveway, I turned my porch light on and it returned to my door barking as if desperately trying to tell me it was lost.

Peering through the screen door, I could see its wiry brown and white hair and small body, appearing to weigh about 3 pounds. However, I was unable to see if it had a collar or license.
