Success, suspensions and saving money

Kudos for a successful student program, suspension of a school custodian and budget concerns dominated the three-hour school board meeting as the school year wraps up in Levy County.

The board receives regular updates on programs within the school system, and on Tuesday it was Dr. Rosalind Hall, director of student services, and District SEDNET Coordinator Marcy Young’s turn to boast about the Positive Behavior System, or PBS, which has been phased into 10 schools since 2006.

Traditionally, when a student had a behavioral problem, the goal was to stop the bad behavior through the use of punishment. In more recent years, the thinking has shifted to teaching appropriate behaviors, replacing bad behaviors with new ones and rewarding good behavior, if appropriate.

According to Hall, PBS is a three - five-year process that has shown increasingly positive results over the years while showing that the numbers of inappropriate behaviors have decreased. Each school has a team of staff members who work with a coach, who leads them through the process.
