Spring practice –Indians turn it up a notch

-A A +A
By Claude Lewis

No doubt about it, the second time around is more comfortable for everyone involved.

We're talking about high school football, of course.

Last year was Ajay Ulmer's first year as head coach at Chiefland High.

He was a seasoned coach with lots of enthusiasm and knowledge, but getting to know everyone and feeling comfortable in a new environment can go a long way toward reaching goals.

This year, Ulmer has a head start on things. He has worked with his staff for a year and now knows all the players and their work habits and capabilities.

"It's always easier after you've been here a while," Ulmer said following Monday's practice session - the first in full pads this spring. "The kids out there now have been with me for a year. We're in good shape compared to a year ago."

Last year was a growing one for Chiefland football. The Indians were coming off a one win campaign.

The Indians went on to finish 4-6 and were competitive in a number of the losses.

This year, Ulmer, his staff and players realize they can turn the corner with a little more hard work and dedication.
