Sheriff comes clean on pending audit

Levy County Sheriff Johnny Smith felt compelled to let the public know about some minor bookkeeping issues at his office when he called a press conference April 8 to explain why an upcoming audit report will show areas where some improvements are needed.

"The taxpayers look to us to be good stewards with their money," Smith said.

An audit by Davis, Monk & Co., shows areas that need upgrading, Smith said, and the correction of deficiencies in the finance department already have begun and will continue. Davis, Monk & Co. is an independent auditing company hired by the county to check finances of constitutional offices.

Levy County Sheriff's Office Business Manager Barbara Pendray has been with the agency for about three and a half years, Smith said. Her bookkeeping background comes from the Florida Department of Corrections. Smith said he hired Certified Public Accountant Barbara Brannan of Williston to train Pendray in methods for better documentation of financial records as directed in the audit. That training will start within a couple of weeks, Smith said.
