September is National Sea Cadet Month

-A A +A

Once a sea cadet goes through two weeks of recruit training and completes their Basic Military Requirements course work they are eligible for a variety of advanced trainings.
Topics can be as low key as culinary arts or as intense as special warfare combat (SWCC). The exposure to airman training, scuba classes, Seabee programs and medical instruction prepare cadets for real world military experience. Kids that go a different route still gain valuable teamwork skills, self confidence and competence in a range of vocations. Cadets may also choose to spend a week volunteering at a base, such as Coast Guard Station Yankeetown, side by side with active military in order to earn advance training credit.
The training program costs about $200 and includes three meals a day and housing in barracks, on ships or camps. Cadets are also afforded opportunities to travel to other countries, as part of the International Sea Cadet Association. This summer, some cadets visited Russia, China and Sweden.
