Video: Commissioner Lilly Rooks and Sen. Bill Nelson

By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson’s meeting with tri-county elected officials was a case of good news-bad news.

The good news is the stimulus bill passed.

The bad news is not everyone will be satisfied.

Nelson met with elected officials from Dixie, Gilchrist and Levy County at the Gilchrist County Courthouse in Trenton Tuesday afternoon as part of a briefing tour. Nelson had visited Polk County earlier in the day and had later meetings in Live Oak and Monticello.

After going over how the economic meltdown started, Nelson said of the stimulus bill: “It’s electro shock therapy to bring the economy back to life.”

Levy Commissioner Lilly Rooks, who earlier in the day learned that only $1 million will be coming into Levy County for transit projects and that the county will be competing with its eight municipalities for the money, asked Nelson about it.

Nelson said the stimulus bill has $1.3 billion for transit and she should look farther down the road. “That will come in a highway bill later this year,” Nelson said.
