Rotary hears about mentoring program

Sharon Battles was guest speaker at the weekly Chiefland Rotary Club meeting at BubbaQue’s on Wednesday. She told the nearly three dozen in attendance about how they could help empower troubled youth in Levy County.

Battles, a 1979 Williston High graduate, is the executive director of Unity Family Community Center Inc., in Williston. That’s what she and UFCC’s Joyce Wilson spoke first to the rotary about. UFCC received a grant Jan. 1 that will allow it to expand its community services to include a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents.

Battles said UFCC has served more than 1,300 disadvantaged youth in Levy County, and recently began expanding into Marion County. The grant opens more opportunities to affect families in a positive way.

“We will target this generation and target their lives,” Wilson said. “We don’t want to focus just on the kids, we want to focus on the whole family. We find other resources to cater to those families, in addition to mentoring.”
