Residents prepare for Suwannee flooding

The almost 50 residents of Fowlers Bluff took the news without blinking.

"There's a bunch of water coming down here that's going to cause a lot of problems," Mark Johnson, Levy County director of Emergency Management, said. "Flood stage is 5.5 feet, the Suwannee River Water Management District is calling for 9, but because of the drought conditions they have bumped it to 8.9."

As floods go it going to be of fairly short duration, Johnson told the residents of the town that is one of the last stops along the Suwannee River during a flood preparedness meeting one week ago.

What has really startled the National Weather Service and Suwannee River folks is the velocity of water coming down and that means a lot of debris coming down here.

"How many people are planning to get water in their homes?" Johnson asked. A majority of the hands went up.

That was last Thursday. On Saturday evening, Levy County, working in conjunction with state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers and Dixie County officials shut down the boat ramps along the river in both counties.
