Several towns are planning ceremonies to remember the sacrifice of veterans for Memorial Day this holiday weekend.
While there is no tribute planned in Chiefland, there are ceremonies in Old Town, Cedar Key and Bronson.
Ivan Chubb, the Veterans Representative for the Veterans Administration, is organizing the Cedar Key and Bronson events.
The Cedar Key ceremony is at 1 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Key Cemetery. The invocation and benediction will be given by the Rev. Daniel Carswell of Cedar Key Church of Christ, The Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Mike Harrell, commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps League Tri-County Detachment 1018. The Detachment will also provide the 21-gun salute, a military tradition.
The music will be provided by Sandy McQuilty and Taps will be played by retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. Harvey Hampton.
The speaker for the event is Cedar Key Mayor Pat O'Neal, a veteran.
In Bronson, the ceremony will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the City Cemetery. Capt. Glen Busby, the chaplain at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, will be the speaker and give the invocation and benediction.
