Red Belly Day dies quietly

Staff Writer

FANNING SPRINGS - For the past 12 years, Red Belly Day has been a celebration at Fanning Springs State Park on Memorial Day Weekend.

That will be no more, said Bob Leichner of the Dixie County Chamber of Commerce. He made the announcement during the Fanning Springs Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet on Feb. 12.

Last year, the Dixie Chamber spent $32,000 and made just a little profit for the chamber, he said. There is no longer enough support from volunteers to make Red Belly Day happen any more, he said.

People in Dixie County see Gilchrist and Levy counties' restaurants and motels gaining benefits from the event at the state park, but Dixie County businesses see little gain, he said.

Among the musicians in the past at the festival were Toby Keith, Confederate Railroad, Bellamy Brothers and Highway 101. Many top local groups have performed as well, Leichner said.

Attorney Robert Moeller of Cross City started Red Belly Day when he was president of the Dixie Chamber. He led the effort for nine years before Leichner accepted the duty.
