Concerns on wildlife, water supply

By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

INGLIS — Less than 100 people turned out for a public hearing on Tramac's mining proposal and its environmental impact but the message was respectfully delivered by the mostly elderly crowd: We don't want it because it will harm the environment.
The hearing was to gather comment on a more than 800-page Draft Environmental Impact Statement issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The report outlines eight possible scenarios — ranging from no mining to limiting where and how long the company can conduct limerock mining operations on  2, 757 acres of a 4,750 acre site near Inglis that it would lease from Plum Creek Timber.
Tarmac King Road Mine has requested a permit for a proposed mining operation that would operate for 100 years. Mining to depths of 220 feet and leaving behind more than 20 lakes. To compensate for the loss of wetlands in the mining area, the company has proposed upgrading more than 2,000 acres of wetlands on a neighboring site.
