The word "evolution"can bring on different reactions and emotions.

To the scientific community, it's the Darwin concept on the ever-changing state of how we got to where we are today.

To devout Christians, the theory can clash with the Biblical words of creationism.

Things get touchy when adressing the topic in school science classes.

Having already updated its standards for schoolkids in grades K-12 in mathematics and language arts, the Florida Department of Education has adopted new guidelines for science.

A panel of writers from all walks of science has drawn up new Sunshine Standards that could go into effect for the 2008-09 school year if approved by the State Board of Education members on Feb. 19.

The FLDOE communications office said the last time the standards were updated was 1996. Information was outdated and needed to be refreshed. Sagging FCAT scores were the proof in the pudding.

Workshops were held in big cities such as Jacksonville and Fort Lauderdale. A draft of the new Sunshine Standards was posted on the FLDOE Website. The FLDOE asked for public feedback.
