Property taxes cut although millage stays same

Property owners in Chiefland will likely see their tax bills go down as a result of the city commission’s decision to keep the millage the same as last year: 4.75.

Because property values have been declining, it’s likely property owners will see lower bills for 2009. It means the city will have $22,351 less revenue from the ad valorem property tax than last year.

The decision came in a budget workshop and meeting where the commission also wrangled with balancing the budget that begins Oct. 1 — especially the budget for the fired department which also provides services in the county and at Fowlers Bluff under contract.

The proposed budget of $2,676,520.13 still needs work and the commission will be meeting on Aug. 10 to iron out the details. But the decision to set the millage at 4.75 or $4.75 per $1,000 of property value is locked in at its highest possible rate for the year. Under state law, once the millage is set by the state deadline — August 4 — it cannot be raised, it can only go lower.
