New ordinance regulates sexually oriented business

BRONSON - With only a half dozen citizens watching on the night of Dec. 18, the Levy County Board of County Commissioners unanimously adopted an ordinance to regulate sexually oriented businesses in the unincorporated part of the county.

Rather than conduct the public meeting in the commission's meeting room, a courtroom was used to allow for more people to watch the action.

While the mass of general public failed to appear, the proposed ordinance became law nonetheless.

Any city may adopt the county ordinance into its local laws, County Attorney Anne Brown said. If a municipality chooses to expand the county ordinance into its own borders, she added, then county staff will perform the business licensing process, and the subsequent fees paid by the business will go to the county coffers.

A city can create its own ordinance with licensing fees and collection methods instead, however, if its leaders choose to do so.

In 2006, the Levy County Commission contracted with attorney Scott D. Bergthold of Chattanooga to review the existing regulations governing sexually oriented businesses. The county already has paid his fee for the service.
