New Christmas lights could save city thousands

Santa might be giving the gift of savings to the City of Chiefland this year.
Last year, out of the belief the city could do a better job of its display of Christmas lights that adorn city light poles, Chiefland resident Marcia Pollack came forward and asked the commission to do something. She told the commission the display was pathetic compared to some of the other cities in Levy County. Commissioners tasked her with finding a solution. And, according to Pollack, she did.
"I've done a lot of research," Pollack told commissioners Monday at their regular meeting. She said she found a light manufacturer in Illinois that could provide 60 pole lights for about $23,000.  The lights, which would use LEDs, come with a six-year warranty and can last up to 12 years, Pollack said.
But even if the lights only lasted six years, it would save the city about $31,000 in the long run, according to Pollack. The city rents Christmas lights for about $9,000 a year, which adds up to $54,000 in six years.
"This is, to me, all very positive. I don't see any negatives," Pollack said.
