Negotiations open for public safety director

-A A +A
By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

A man who has lived among the Seminole tribe and said he liked the experience is the top candidate for the newly created Levy County public safety director position.
David Knowles, a native of Hawthorne and a captain with the Citrus County Fire Rescue, is the No. 1 pick for the position after the Levy County Commission spent over three hours interviewing six finalists.
As emergency services administrator for the Seminole Tribe of Florida from 2001-2003 Knowles and his family lived on the Big Cypress reservation.
The commission has named Commissioner Marsha Drew of Yankeetown (R-District 3), Human Resources Director Jacqueline Martin, County Coordinator Freddie Moody and EMS Medical Director Donald McCoy to a committee to negotiate the final agreement for hiring.
One item of negotiation will be the salary. It was advertised as ranging between $55,000 and $75,000.
The commission was unanimous in making Knowles their top choice for the job of administrator for the county's Emergency Medical Service and the county's fire operations.
“He did his homework,” Commissioner Ryan Bell of Chiefland (R-District 4) said.
