Mosquitoes are on the attack

Spring of 2007 in Levy County was a little scary, as drought brought wildfires that turned the skies an eerie black.

The scenario has been different this year, as lots of rain in the winter and early spring have eased the fire danger.

But as nature would have it, one threat quelled can bring about another one.

In this case, it's called the attack of the mosquitoes.

Anyone who has been outdoors in the evenings and early mornings the past couple weeks can relate.

Matt Weldon of Levy County Parks and Recreation and his trusty Mosquito Control workers have been out spraying constantly since the hatchout.

"It's county-wide," Weldon said. "In fact, it's all across north-central Florida. I even talked to someone in south Georgia and they're bad there. It hasn't been this bad since the hurricanes of 2004."

Weldon said the potential of the blitz has been there all along.
