A man shot at his University Oaks home on Friday evening was airlifted to Shands Hospital for treatment according to a Levy County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Deputies responded to a call at about 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 13 at the Northeast 106th Court home of Denorris Carter. A neighbor, who made the 911 call, reported hearing a single gunshot, seeing a car drive away from Carter's driveway and finding Carter lying in the leaves in his front yard.

Carter had a gunshot wound to his upper chest area, said Sheriff's Lt. Scott Tummond.

Levy County Emergency Medical Services responded and a Shandscair helicopter transported Carter to the Gainesville facility.

Carter told investigators he was outside his home and was confronted by a man and a woman whom he did not know. Carter told deputies the man demanded his wallet and for unknown reasons shot him. Tummond said the man's wallet was found on the ground and did not have any money in it, something Carter said he told the man.
