Lower taxes proposed for Chiefland

Although city budget matters will officially be voted on next month, it looks like Chiefland residents will once again see a decrease in the amount of property taxes they owe for the upcoming year.
At a budget workshop Monday night, City Financial Coordinator Laurie Copeland told the commission that the city's general fund, accounting for a proposed millage rate of 4.75, is in balance. The budget for the upcoming year's fund is $2,262,060.29.
The tax rate has been the same for the last two years, which, when considering the fall in property value the tax is based on, means less money coming in to the city. Property taxes are the biggest contributor to city funds. The city, according to the proposed budget, will receive about $29,000 less than it did the previous fiscal year because of the unchanging rate.
The tax rate charges $1 for every $1,000 of assessed property value. So, a millage rate of 4.75 means, for example, that a resident owning a home worth $100,000 would pay $475 in property taxes.
“In order to do that, we did have to trim a little bit," Copeland told commissioners.
