Little ones get flu mist this week

The Levy County Health Department is not taking any chances with a possible flu outbreak and is administering flu mist to students in the county's schools this week and next.

“We're giving flu mist in the schools and day cares and pre-k,” said Barbara Locke, health department administrator. “I think it's really making a difference.”

Levy is only one of about three counties in the state doing flu mist in the schools, she said.

“We decided that it's such an important thing because our little children are the ones who spread it around.”

The flu mist does take time, money and staff to distribute, but, Locke said, “Luckily we have a Medical Reserve Corps and they volunteer to help us to do the initiative.”

For anyone not receiving the mist in schools and without insurance coverage, Locke said the department offers flu shots for $20 per person,

If anyone has the flu, she said they, too, can stop by the department. “We take a swab and send it off to identify which type it is.”
