State retirement rules conflict with plan to cut $1.1 million from bdget

By Kellie Parkin

School Superintendent Bob Hastings’ plan to ask all school board employees to take three days off without pay has been dismissed, he told the Board Tuesday morning.

Because of the state retirement system, teachers must have a contract of 196 workdays. The plan would have reduced it to 193 days, jeopardizing retirement eligibility.

“It was deemed that it would not be appropriate and we couldn’t take that route,” Hastings said.

Other budget reducing measures have been put into place such as reducing spring sports to the minimum amount of games necessary to compete and prohibiting any additional tournaments not already scheduled, as well as limiting school field trips to educational and curriculum-based excursions only.

At this time, the district has yet to release how it will reduce the budget further to meet the vital goal of having at least a 3 percent fund balance to begin the 2009-2010 school year.
