Levy ready for nuclear disaster

The gymnasium of the old Bronson High School was bustling with activity, but there were no signs of teenaged slam-dunking heroes or high-flipping cheerleaders.

No crowd of adoring fans could be seen cheering from the stands.

There seemed to be players on the court, however. Some of them sported forest green vests while others were clad head to toe in long white suits complete with masks.

The players were positioned in various clusters on the court at the end of a labyrinth fashioned from yellow caution tape, but they didn't seem to be in competition with one another.

In fact, they didn't seem to be playing a game at all. But someone was keeping score.

On May 21, the Levy County Emergency Management, the Levy County Health Department and various local fire departments staged a nuclear contamination scenario at the old Bronson High School.

"It's to prove to the federal government that we have a plan in place to deal with a nuclear emergency," Mark Johnson, Levy County Emergency Management director, said shortly before the testing began.
