“Traditional values” include listening with respect whether it be to parents’ wishes or the president

Since School Superintendent Bob Hastings' election  last year, he has been on a path to remold the school system to his vision.

He is opposed to teachers retiring then returning to the classroom at the top of the pay scale, so he laid a few off at the end of the school year. But he's hired several back with the help of federal stimulus money pushed through Congress by President Barack Obama.

He has attempted to put into effect a rule that teachers entering the system should not be paid for all their experience. But he has backed off of doing that without negotiating it with the teachers' union.

His latest act is keeping Levy County students from  seeing President Barack Obama's speech telling them to set goals, and work  hard at getting an education, so they can be successful.

Hastings did not publicly announce the decision in advance. He did  not tell students, parents, the taxpayers or the voters.

That was obvious when a parent recalled how she asked her children if they had seen the president in school the day of the speech. They said no. She was surprised. She asked if I knew why.
