If trees are Mother Nature’s air purifiers, then Chiefland residents can breathe easy.

The city commission, in a final reading Monday night, approved 4-1 a new landscape and tree ordinance aimed at improving the look, safety and conservation efforts of the city.

Commissioner Rollin Hudson, who voted in favor of the ordinance upon its initial reading, was the only one to vote against it at Monday night’s meeting.

“I just think that sometimes you have too many ordinances,” Hudson said after the meeting about the 41-page document, which is only part of the city’s new comprehensive plan addressing land use, transportation, housing, infrastructure, economic development and intergovernmental coordination.

Hudson said the ordinance, which may effectively regulate what large corporations and businesses can do, could make it hard for small businesses or residents who are unable, financially, to comply with the city’s landscape standards.

The ordinance goes into effect immediately.
