Fourteen year-old Jillian Sanchez went to the FFA Stars Over Florida Convention and Ceremony with expectations. She returned having met those expectations and came home with the Discovery Degree Award.

The award may be the first of many FFA awards for which she may be eligible during her FFA lifetime.

Jillian was recognized for her accomplishments at the convention during the week of June 12 in Orlando.

The Chiefland eighth-grade student took the stage with confidence June 14 to be interviewed by a panel of judges. After the interview, Jillian was free to attend other workshops and events at the Caribe Royal. Later, as evening approached, all category applicants arrived at the awards ceremony dressed in their FFA official dress.

Jillian looked like a winner already in her black skirt, scarf and FFA Jacket.

When the category for Star Discovery was announced, Jillian took the stage to accept her award as the first-place winner. She was accompanied by her parents Trey and Latashia Sanchez, as well as Chiefland Middle School Advisor Matthew Dettloff.

The prestigious award is, in itself is the accomplishment, however, there is a cash award as well as a plaque to commemorate the honor.

Sanchez isn’t resting on her laurels. She continues throughout her summer working with showing cattle, attending the Georgia Jr. Beef Futurity in Perry, Georgia, July 13 and then to Tampa for the Florida Junior Cattleman’s Kick-Off on July 28.

At summers end, Jillian will then look forward to the fall peanut harvest, which should keep most everyone at Sanchez Farms very busy.
