THE ISSUE: The move to block reapportionment amendments.

-A A +A

OUR OPINION: A cynical grab for more power by state politicians.

In last November’s elections, 63 percent of Florida’s voters said they wanted to take the politics out of the process used to draw up congressional district lines in the state.

Despite the mandate, the power-hungry leaders of the Florida Legislature are now doing everything they can to ignore the vote of the people. Their efforts are deplorable.

We are also disappointed Gov. Rick Scott seems to have already bowed to the whims of the Florida Legislature leaders. We thought he went to Tallahassee to try to change things.

House Speaker Dean Cannon has joined a lawsuit filed by two minority legislators who are concerned that without political interference, districts for Florida House and Senate seats and congressional seats won’t be drawn up to guarantee minority representation.

Speaker Cannon’s chief concern is not that districts are created to protect minority legislators; he is more concerned he won’t have the political power to create boundaries that protect members of his political party when these amendments are implemented.
