Things were getting about as dry as a desert for the Chiefland High boys varsity basketball team.

The winless drought reached back to last year, or 32 days to be more precise.

Last Thursday night, Jan. 31, the Indians broke a nine-game losing streak with a 68-53 victory over visiting Interlachen.

Chiefland raised its record to 8-16. Interlachen fell to 5-15.

"It's good to get a victory heading into the district tournament," Indian coach Mark Lundy said.

Chiefland played Newberry in a Class 3A District 5 opener Tuesday night in Williston. The Indians were seeded sixth and Newberry third.

It was senior night Jan. 31 with two Indians honored before the game – Delmar Dial and Casey Brown.

Looking back, the last time Chiefland had won was back on Dec. 29 against Melbourne-West Shore in a consolation game in the Bronson Christmas Tournament.

The Indians have gone through a lot this season –most notably the Jan. 10 fight against Fort White. The varsity players were suspended and the junior varsity playesr moved up for three games to prevent forfeits.
