Indians clawed by Panthers

Chiefland football had a good week of practice following last week's letdown loss against Mayo. The defense played with outstanding aggression Friday against number four-ranked Newberry. But with multiple miscues on offense against one of the best teams in the state, the inevitable happened - the Indians fell, 22-7, to the Panthers.

"We just couldn't get our rhythm established on offense," said Chiefland head coach Ajay Ulmer. "We'd start to put a drive together and then make some mistake, a penalty or turnover, that would really disrupt our progress."

Blocking was part of the problem, Ulmer said. QB Brent Slaughter just couldn't get enough time to find receivers. Procedural errors were another. Minor setbacks like pre-snap penalties were enough to give a tough Newberry defense the upper hand.

As they have in other games this season, defense and special teams kept the Indians in it when things weren't going well otherwise. Chiefland's lone score came in the first quarter, when Cantrell Richardson received a punt right outside the Indians' end zone.
