Hitchhikers are everywhere

I was camping in the Ocala National Forest Tuesday and Wednesday night at Alexander Springs. When I got up on Thursday morning, I heard noises coming from under the hood of my car.

When I opened the hood to check it out, I found an eye the size of a marble staring straight back at me! I nearly jumped back, re-gained my composure, and realized the eye was attached to a feral kitten!

Not wanting to hurt the creature, I double checked my engine compartment before leaving and starting the car. I couldn't see anything, so I drove home without incident, making two stops for groceries and gas.

When I arrived home in Chiefland, I took a nap, unloaded the car, checked my telephone messages and made a phone call. While on the phone, I looked out the window at my car and noticed two little shadows underneath the car. The shadows were two feral kittens, one a gray tiger, the other all black.

I quickly trapped both kittens with a hav-a-heart trap, some water and tuna fish. I called Levy County Animal Control, and expect a call from them tomorrow morning to let me know when they can pick the kittens up.
