Historical society has three talks on Civil War

-A A +A

On Saturday, Jan. 14, the Levy County Historical Society will present the first of three presentations which tell about the invasion of the Civil War into Florida. Everyone with an interest in the history and heritage of Florida is invited to join us at this free event to learn more about this time in our history.

The first of the three part series will feature Warren Feldman, M.D., who portrays a colonel and chief surgeon in the Confederate Medical Corps. Dr. Feldman will discuss his book, “Blood, Guns, and Germs,” which not only provides insight into 1860s medicine, but also invites readers to learn of the superhuman efforts demonstrated by Civil War surgeons in trying to save Union and Confederate soldiers alike.

Dr. Feldman has been collecting Civil War letters, documents, and equipment for years. Among his collection are Sanitary Commission reports, medical discharges, and reproductions of vintage medical tests. These documents provided the basis to create Dr. Eli Johnson, the main character in Dr. Feldman’s book, which will be on sale at the event for $10.
