Agreement with Alachua County provides coverage

All citizens know that help is only a simple phone call away. 911 – The universal number for help. But on Wednesday, Feb. 20, the Levy County Sheriff's Office hit its own internal 911 when it lost service provided by AT&T between 3:30 and 8:30 p.m., according to a sheriff's press release.

Because 911 Coordinator Mike West had thought about this “what if”, he had a plan in place and it worked like a charm.

West had a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the Alachua County Sheriff's Office's 911 center Levy residents who called 911 were unaware their call was routed to the Alachua County facility.

"Alachua County operators were able to forward Levy County 911 calls to the appropriate local operators, who immediately dispatched the necessary services. No calls were missed and Levy County did not experience any interruption of services,” West said.

Levy County 911 operators also went to the Alachua County facility to assist those operators with the anticipated increase in calls.

Meanwhile, Mr. West worked with AT&T onsite in Levy County to correct the issue.

The agreement, which also provides coverage in the case of emergencies or disasters in Levy County assures no interruptions in Levy County Sheriff's Office operations.
