Florida's new marijuana law

-A A +A

M. C. of Alachua asks, “What’s the deal with the new marijuana law? Someone told me that it didn’t apply to too many people. Is that true? So what is being voted on in November? Is that something different?”

Dear M. C.:

Yes, on June 16, Gov. Scott signed into law a bill which allows the use of a special strain of marijuana to treat people who experience epileptic seizures. The Legislature was convinced by the presentation of medical records and testimony that marijuana significantly helps those who suffer from such a problem. In fact, the bill is entitled the “Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act. There are, reportedly, over 125,000 people who will be able to take advantage of this new law, which also allows those with cancer and Lou Gehrig’s disease to legally use marijuana. The strain of marijuana to be used is called “Charlotte’s Web” and it does not, reportedly, cause the patient to get “high.”
