Fee waiver granted for low-income housing developer

City commissioners voted unanimously Monday night to grant a $10,000 building fee waiver for a developer trying to construct apartments in Chiefland for low-income seniors. Creative Choice Homes Vice President Jason Larsen requested the fee waiver at last month’s meeting, saying it was necessary, as a sign of good faith on behalf of the city, to qualify for federal grants. He said that because of the competitive nature in obtaining the grants, the project, known as Pine Ridge Manor Senior’s Apartments, would not be pursued without a waiver. The commission voted to postpone making a decision at last month’s meeting on the matter, fearing a split decision in Commissioner Sammy Cason’s absence and wanting time for the public to speak up on whether or not it wanted another low-income housing development in Chiefland. “I had one anonymous letter who was against it,” said Vice-Mayor Teresa Barron, who made the motion to approve the waiver. She said the lack of people to protest the development at the meeting was a sign that the public, as a whole, was not opposed to the idea.
