Explore women authors for Women’s History Month

By Warren Parkin

The following American authors and works should bring hours of intellectual engagement to anyone interested in how women portray life and living in times past as people across the nation celebrate Women’s History Month.

The Private Mary Chesnut, the Unpublished Civil War Diaries gives an inside look into southern politics. A collection of diary entries written by Mary Chesnut between 1861 and 1865, this book brings rare candor to the political leadership and the landscape of the Civil War from an upper class white woman’s perspective. “I was of necessity a rebel born,” Chesnut declares. Her interactions with Confederate leadership humanize historical figures, making them come alive in the present. Unabashedly direct, Chesnut describes the sitting president of the United States as “this horrid black republican ogre Lincoln.” Married to Sen. Chesnut of South Carolina, she boldly declares, “I was a Seceder - but I dreaded the future.”
