Duke slates open house to discuss nuke plant shutdown

CRYSTAL RIVER — To increase awareness and understanding of the Crystal River nuclear plant decommissioning plan, Duke Energy has scheduled a public open house.

It will be from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, in the Magnolia Room at the Plantation on Crystal River, 9301 W. Fort Island Trail, Crystal River.

Subject-matter experts will be available to meet with residents, hear concerns and answer questions about the nuclear plant decommissioning plan. Light refreshments will be served.

Duke has also launched a decommissioning website for the plant, known as CR3, at www.duke-energy.com/CR3 to serve as an information resource for the public.

The open house is a separate event from the local public meeting that United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission will have to discuss the decommissioning plan and oversight process.

Duke spokeswoman Heather Danenhower explained that submitting the Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report (PSDAR) triggers three activities:
