County wants tax bills paid, not property

By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

Notice to property owners who have unpaid taxes from 2009 and have an unclaimed tax deed, you can expect to receive a letter warning you to pay up or the county will be able to apply to take possession of the property tax certificate and eventually the property.

The Levy County Commission on Tuesday approved sending a letter to the owners of properties whose tax certificates were up for sale on June 1, 2009.

Levy County Tax Collector Linda Fugate said the unclaimed tax certificates – basically those whose debt was not bought up by others – number in the thousands. Fugate said this year's delinquent tax rolls had 200 parcels with unpaid taxes whose tax certificates did not sell at the annual auction.

She said the law says the county “shall” (must) apply for the tax deeds of those properties that remain delinquent.

Fugate said anyone receiving the letter can contact the office and they will work with them to get the debt paid. She said generally her office would like to get payment within 60 days, but it will work with the property owners.
