Progress Energy Florida announced on Monday that it will repair the Crystal River nuclear containment facility and return the electric generation plant to production in 2014.

In filings with federal and state regulatory agencies Progress said the repairs are "the best option," and is taking steps to complete more detailed engineering and construction analyses.

“This would be a major repair, requiring significant cooperation and coordination with state and federal regulators and others,” said Vincent Dolan, Progress Energy Florida president and CEO.  He said the plant provides a safe, dependable and emission-free resource to provide energy reliably and affordably for its 1.6 million customers for many years. It is capable of producing 860 megawatts of power.

He said the plant, known as CR3 is the least-cost resource to operate, and saves about $300 million a year in fuel costs. The other four plants at Crystal River use coal.  The plant employs about 500 people who live in the Citrus, Marion and Levy counties area.
