Crist proposes record education budget

Gov. Charlie Crist unveiled his 2010-2011 proposed budget on Monday, recommending $22.7 billion for state, federal and local funding.

The proposed budget is a $535.5 million increase over the current fiscal year, and would set a record in school funding if passed.

Though ambitious, Crist's proposals are, for now, just that.

The budget still has to go through the state Legislature to become official. Levy County School Board financial officer Bob Clemons said he wasn't too excited about the proposed budget, despite its goals.

"I'm like eveyone else, I read the headlines,” Clemons said. "I understand what his intent is, but it's between him and the House whether or not they move in that direction. But you can't put much faith in proposals, frankly.

"Until the legislature puts the budget out, it doesn't affect my world."
