County gives tax payers a break

Millage stays same as last year 7.4212

By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

The Levy County Commission gave preliminary approval to a $61 million annual budget that uses every penny of its reserves and its capital improvement fund to balance the books and keeps property tax millage at last year’s rate of 7.4212.

By keeping the same millage and with declining property values, the commission in effect gave residents — 1 in 8 of whom is unemployed — a break on their annual bill. The action on Sept. 10 came on top of the commission’s decision on Sept. 8 to cut the Emergency Medical Assessment by half, giving homeowners and businesses a break.

The budget and millage have one more hurdle to clear as the commission holds a second and final vote on both Monday at 6 p.m. in the commission meeting room.

The vote on the budget came after Sheriff Johnny Smith, who has cut his budget by 5 percent as requested by the commission, asked to have $70,000 of the $582,000 cut restored to cover maintenance on the aging and high mileage fleet. He said vehicle maintenance was $17,000 in the past month.
