County continues with paging improvements

BRONSON - Chiefland Fire Chief John Ward, speaking on behalf of the Levy County Fire Advisory Board, convinced the County Commission on March 25 to continue improving the paging system through Williams Communication as planned.

This project was not among the budgeted the capital improvements projects for this fiscal year, County Coordinator Freddie Moody said.

Ward had wanted the county to switch to a $648,893 simulcast paging system to work in conjunction with the $1.5 million 800-megahertz (MHz) radio system. To obtain this "Cadillac" of paging systems, the county would have sought a 90 percent- 10 percent matching grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

County Commissioner Lilly Rooks said she sees improvement of the paging system as a priority, which cannot wait another six months for FEMA to decide if it would award the grant.

The Intergovernmental Communications Fund, which is being used to match a possible FEMA grant for radio tower improvements, Moody said, cannot be used to match a grant for paging, because paging applies only to fire and Emergency Medical Services.
