County buys water buffalos

The county is prepared to help any municipal water system that has problems in the future with four portable water tanks, known as “water buffalos”, that it agreed to buy on Tuesday.

County Emergency Management Director Mark Johnson said the county has interlocal agreements to borrow water buffalos from other agencies as it did last summer when saltwater intrusion crept into Cedar Key's wells forcing residents to use bottled water for cooking and drinking.

Donations and purchases of bottle water only lasted the island community for two weeks, Johnson said, and other governments loaned water buffalos to the town under the agreements.

Johnson said the purchase of the four, 500-gallon units, using a federal grant, will allow the county to supply water to communities without a wholesome source of drinking water.

Johnson presented the board with three quotes for the tanks:

• Water Wagon of Osceola, Ind., $22,820

• Portable Tank Group of Sebastian, Fla., $23,330, and

• Allied Manufacturing Inc., $25,580.
