Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Mike "Scooter" Joyner, son of Levy County Commissioner Mike Joyner (R-District 1) and Diana Priest Joyner, was injured Tuesday morning while working with an inmate crew on a University of Florida farm in Citra.

The younger Joyner who has campaigned for his father in this year's election suffered a hand injury while using farm equipment and is hospitalized at Shands Hospital at UF.

The inmate work crew was working at the Plant Science Research & Education Unit at 2556 W. Highway 318, Citra.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has an arrangement with the university, where the office provides a limited number of inmate trustees to help with farm maintenance and research projects, according to a Marion County Sheriff's Office press release. In turn, a generous amount of the food produced on the farm is donated to the Marion County Jail, where it is served to inmates.

The deputy was supervising 30 inmates while working on the farm.
